When simple things like eating and talking become too much - jaw pain

Temporal Mandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction and stress related jaw pain is apparently on the rise and can be aggravated by the wearing of masks that has been necessary because of COVID-19.

BRCP Practitioner Helen Baker is keen to reassure people experiencing jaw pain that they are not alone and that there are things you can do to help relieve the symptoms. She also believes that now more than ever, it is important to educate Allied Health Practitioners about TMJ Dysfunction and how it can be approached to get the best results.

Her own experience and a simple desire to help others live healthier, better, pain-free lives have been driving factors behind creating her practice and now, sharing her knowledge through the development of training for others. She explains all here.

TMJ Dysfunction has been proposed as the third most common chronic pain disorder but having a clear diagnosis can be quite challenging. The most common symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction include headaches; clenching or grinding of the teeth; neck, shoulder or back pain; a dull aching sensation in the face; tinnitus; clicking sensations and a limited range of motion when opening and closing the mouth.

Changes are often detected in the musculoskeletal system to predispose one to chronic pain. When a client presents with chronic TMJ Dysfunction and associated pain, fascial restrictions are evident throughout the entire body hence why I truly believe in a full body approach to TMJ Dysfunction.

In 2007 I dislocated my jaw whilst eating a bread roll! This was the beginning of my journey to creating TMJ Massage Therapies: A Whole Body Approach to TMJ Dysfunction. A much needed, non-invasive and long-lasting pain relief treatment for those affected by TMJ Dysfunction. 14 years later I am now a leading expert in this highly-specialised area with clients travelling from all over the UK and further afield for TMJ Massage Therapies treatments in my clinic based in Cornwall, UK. I have an established history of client success, treating many people who have lived with both acute and chronic TMJ pain and associated conditions, where conventional medicine has failed, offering them welcome relief from years of pain. Clients are now being referred to me through their Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Dentists, GPs and Hearing Specialists.

As a fellow TMJ Dysfunction sufferer myself I am on a mission to eliminate jaw pain. I completely understand how painful and tiring it can be when your jaw aches so much that simple things like eating and talking just become too much!

TMJ Massage Therapies offers a bespoke, holistic treatment to help eliminate jaw pain, tension, headaches, migraines and tinnitus. Combining TMJ Myofascial Release, Remedial Massage and Alternative Holistic Health Therapies, TMJ Massage Therapies treats the body as a whole, not just the jaw in isolation.

I am a firm believer in a whole-body approach to treating TMJ Dysfunction. The role of fascia is 100% evident in each of my treatments. This bespoke approach treats the whole person (emotionally, physically and energetically), by way of altering the physical structure of fascia.

Through the formulation of the TMJ Massage Therapies® online CPD Training Course, I am helping to raise awareness of TMJ Dysfunction and train therapists and practitioners in the techniques that have served me so well. I believe this is a natural progression of my proactivity in the sector, driven by a simple desire to help others live healthier, better, pain-free lives.

I am very passionate about sharing my knowledge, passion and proven treatment protocol with as many jaw pain sufferers as possible. I now have a number of other resources available to help fellow jaw pain sufferers manage their pain including a free Self-Care Downloadable booklet, which can be located at www.tmjmassagetherapies.com/selfcareas well as information about the weekly live ‘Relax Your Jaw At Home’ Zoom Sessions. I am also looking forward to launching my Free Your Jaw Podcast, which will be another great resource for jaw pain sufferers throughout the world.
